Learn More About Our Second-Hand Shop

We’re proud to be a part of our community in Bismarck, ND

House of WhatNots started from humble beginnings. Originally we started selling things I had at my home I’d collected over the years. These are things that I found at flea markets, thrift shops, rummage sales and secondhand stores. Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to grow into the secondhand store that you see today in Bismarck, North Dakota. Now we are able to carefully curate in organize a wider selection of secondhand items than ever before.

What makes us special?

Part of why we’ve been so successful is because we care about creating an incredible experience for our clients. We accomplish this goal by:

  • Carefully cleaning, dusting and inspecting all of our items
  • Offering reasonable prices and specials on our items
  • Choosing only high-quality items for our clients

Everything that we sell has been sourced in North Dakota, so you’ll be buying a piece of our shared regional history when you shop here. Visit our second-hand store today to pick up something special.

ABOUT THE OWNER

Hi I’m Nicci Brelje, owner and curator at House of Whatnots.

Growing up, one of my favorite pastimes was going to rummage sales, flea markets, and secondhand shops with my mom. Those adventures not only sparked my love for unique, preloved items but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the stories behind them.

House of Whatnots was born on a whim. I never planned to open a secondhand shop, but a spontaneous decision to host a pop-up thrift shop at our downtown office changed everything. The overwhelming positive response from the community inspired me to make it a permanent fixture.

House of Whatnots is more than just a shop; it's a sanctuary where customers find a sense of healing and comfort. In a world where they're constantly giving to others, shopping here is something they can do for themselves. Each item in the shop carries memories from its past and is ready to create new stories with its new owner.

With its cozy, eclectic atmosphere and Midwest Coast vibes, House of Whatnots feels like home. It offers something for everyone, inviting all who enter to explore, discover, and connect with the special treasures waiting to be found.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS:

House of Whatnots is a Second Hand Resale Shop with Midwest Coast vibes, offering a unique assortment of items including wicker furniture, coffee mugs, books, collectibles, band tees, souvenirs, disco balls, house decor, glassware, and more.

**Thrift Shop vs. Second Hand Resale Shop:**

  • Thrift shops aim to raise money for a nonprofit organization or charity.
  • A second hand resale shop, like House of Whatnots, involves the owner directly buying and sourcing items from individuals, marketplaces, warehouses, or rummage sales.

At House of Whatnots, each item is sourced, handpicked, carefully curated, and organized by the owner. These “new to you” items are sustainable, high-quality, house-ready treasures that undergo careful inspection before being placed on the sales floor. Specialty items, such as antiques or vintage pieces, are appraised and researched before being priced.

**SECONDHAND IS FIRST CLASS**

Shopping secondhand is important because:

  1. Your money stays in the community.
  2. It's more affordable.
  3. It slows down consumption and waste.
  4. You develop a unique sense of style.
  5. It feels like a treasure hunt.

One of the things that makes House of Whatnots unique is our heart for women in recovery from drugs and alcohol. We know how hard it is starting out, so if you are in sober living, feel free to set up an appointment to come shop the store for free on select items.
